Screen-Free Things to Do on a Car Ride (That Kids Actually Love)

May 27, 2026 | News, Wellness Care

We’ve all been there. Five minutes into a car ride and the chorus begins: “Are we there yet?” It’s tempting to hand over a tablet and call it a day, but screen-free car time is actually a golden opportunity. No distractions, no notifications, just you and your kids in a small space with nothing but time and imagination.

The good news? Kids don’t need a screen to stay entertained. They need connection and a little creativity. Here are some of our favorite screen-free car ride activities that are fun for the whole family (yes, even the grown-ups).

The Grocery Store Game

This one is a crowd favorite and it’s surprisingly tricky for adults too!

Here’s how to play: One person thinks of any item you can find in a grocery store (and we mean any item!) A bunch of bananas, a bottle of shampoo, a frozen pizza, a can of tuna. The rest of the car then takes turns asking yes-or-no questions to try to figure out what it is.

“Is it in the produce section?” “Can you eat it cold?” “Does it come in a box?”

The person who guesses correctly gets to be the next one to think of an item. The fun part? Grocery stores have thousands of items, so the game can go on for miles. It’s a sneaky way to build critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and vocabulary, all while everyone’s laughing about whether peanut butter counts as a liquid.

The Alphabet Game

Pick a category (animals, foods, cities, things at the beach) and work your way through the alphabet together. Each person names something in the category that starts with the next letter. Q and X are always the villains of this game, and that’s half the fun.

Busy Bags / Quiet Bags

Pack a small zip bag with a themed mix of goodies (pipe cleaners, foam stickers, felt shapes, or small figurines). Swap the contents regularly to keep things feeling new. Kids love the novelty of “opening” their bag at the start of a ride.

Pipe Cleaners

Wildly underrated and incredibly cheap. Kids can twist them into animals, letters, bracelets, and little sculptures without any instruction. Toss a handful in the car and let their imagination do the rest.

Wikki Stix
These wax-coated yarn sticks cling to themselves and to car windows, making them perfect for on-the-go creating. Kids can build shapes, scenes, and designs — and they’re fully reusable.

Activity & Seek-and-Find Books

Books like Where’s Waldo, maze collections, or sticker activity books keep hands and minds busy for a surprisingly long time. Keep a small stack in the car and rotate them seasonally.

Dollar Store Fun Finds
Before your next road trip, make a quick stop at the dollar store and let each kid pick out 3–4 small items to keep them busy on the ride. The toys are inexpensive, the kids feel ownership over their choices, and you’d be surprised how much cool stuff you can find. It also builds a little excitement before the trip even starts!
