Athletic Physicals for School & Sports Activities

Getting your kids involved in sports is an excellent way for them to be and stay active. Beyond the obvious physical benefits — exercise, fresh air, staying active — sports help kids build real confidence, learn how to be part of a team, and develop the kind of grit that sticks with them long after the season ends.

Before you let your kids dive into whatever sports they fancy, it’s worth making sure they’re ready to play safely.  A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination or PPE, will help determine if your child can participate in a sport as safely as possible. The exam will provide the reassurance that everything looks good, and it also helps catch anything that might need attention before it becomes a bigger issue down the road.

What Does A Child Sports Physical in Jackson Entail?

A child sports physical is usually done in 4 stages of a comprehensive examination.

The first stage involves documentation of your child’s vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, weight, and height.

Next, we do a brief vision check to make sure your child can see clearly, or flag whether glasses or an updated prescription might be needed.

The third stage involves a thorough review of your child’s medical history. It helps to come prepared with any past illnesses, conditions like asthma or chest pains, prior surgeries, and any serious health conditions in the family — since those can sometimes be relevant risk factors. We will also confirm that your child is up to date on their childhood vaccinations before participating in school sports.

The fourth stage is probably the most important one. This is where your child’s fitness is thoroughly assessed. The heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat are checked for any abnormalities. Your child’s posture, joints, strength, and flexibility are also evaluated.

Whatever issues that may be uncovered during a sports physical should be addressed immediately to prevent any future problem. You may think of this as a preventive measure to ensure your child’s overall well-being.

Why Does Your Child Need a Sports Physical?

Schools and athletic leagues require them for good reason — they help make sure every kid stepping onto the field is ready to be there. But beyond checking a box, a sports physical is a real conversation with your child’s doctor. It’s a chance to talk about where your young athlete might be prone to injury, and to get practical tips and exercises that can help prevent those injuries in the first place. If your child is injured during play, our same-day sick child visits cover sports injuries like fractures, sprains, and cuts.

What If There Is A Problem?

Finding an issue during a sports physical doesn’t mean your child’s sports dreams are over — not even close. Most of the time, it just means a follow-up check or a small adjustment. Something as simple as rechecking blood pressure a week or two later, for example.

In some cases, a referral to a specialist can actually improve your child’s performance over time. Whether it’s injury prevention advice, guidance on the right gear, or a few dietary tweaks — we’re here to help your child reach their full potential, not hold them back from it.
