My child is sick. What should I do now?

by | Dec 15, 2022 | Wellness Care

The pediatricians at Children’s Medical Group are committed to providing the best possible care for your child when they are well and when they are sick. Of course, no one plans on getting sick, but when your child does, we offer same day urgent care visits 7 days a week to help get your child on the mend as soon as possible.

Our pediatricians strongly believe that the best source of urgent care for your child is with our doctors and in our clinics instead of in a standalone urgent care clinic where your child’s medical history is unknown. Generally speaking, ER visits are more costly than office visits and can have long wait times. However, sometimes a severe illness or injury requires an ER visit.

When to go to the Emergency Room

An Emergency Room visit is warranted if:

  • Your child is less than 2 months old and has a fever.  We define a temperature as 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
  • Your child has signs of dehydration, such as very dry lips and mouth, absence of urination for more than 12 hours, lethargy, or confusion.
  • Your child has heavy, fast breathing, gasping for air, and/or manages to utter only two or three words before taking a breath.
  • Your child has a gaping cut on the face.
  • You believe your child has a broken bone, especially if swelling is involved.
  • Your child hits their head and loses consciousness even if just for a few seconds.
  • Your child has had a seizure.

If you are unsure if your child should be seen at CMG or if you should go directly to the ER, please call our clinic to get trusted advice from our experienced pediatric nurses who can guide you in your decision.

Children’s Medical Group Cares

To better serve you and your family, Children’s Medical Group operates an After-Hours Clinic in our Jackson office 7 days a week, including most holidays except for Easter, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The After-Hours Clinic is designed for established CMG patients seeking same-day sick/urgent care visits and is by appointment only to minimize your wait time.  Appointments may be scheduled by calling the office or by scheduling online at childrensmedicalgroup.net. On weekdays, calls for same-day After-Hours sick/urgent care appointments are accepted beginning at 4:00 p.m. with the first appointment typically scheduled at 5:30 p.m. The After-Hours Clinic will remain open each weekday until 6:30 p.m.

The weekday After-Hours Clinic is staffed by one physician and one nurse. The weekend After-Hours Clinic is typically staffed by two physicians and two nurses in the morning and one physician and one nurse in the afternoon.  On weekends, calls for same-day After-Hours sick/urgent care appointments are accepted beginning at 8:00 a.m. with the first appointment typically scheduled at 9:00 a.m. The After-Hours Clinic will remain open until 5:00 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday.

Once the After-Hours Clinic closes, all calls are routed to a nurse triage system. The triage system is staffed by registered nurses who can assist you with most of your questions and concerns. The triage nurses can also contact the on-call CMG physician if needed.
